Ten "Never Do" Convertible Top Operations
1. Refusing to read the owner's manual regarding proper operation of and maintenance on the convertible top. There is maintenance to your top.
2. Attempting to put the convertible top up or down while the care is moving. Enough said.
3. Rubbing the plastic rear window without removing the grit first.
4. Attempting to operate rear window zippers without taking tension off first. (Also, apply ivory soap to the zipper which make them easer to work with.)
5. Continuing to press the electric top switch when the top is clearly not working.
6. Installing large stereo speakers or amps in the top boot ( well) You could either scratch plastic window or if a glass window - break it .
7. Leaving the top down all the time. (your top could shrink up and make it very difficult to get top in the closed position again. ) You should always put your top up when you a finished driving.
8, Regular taking convertible through automatic car washes. Brushes can scratch the protective layer on your materials - a cloth top should be reconditioned yearly to keep its waterproof properties.
9. Buying cut-rate convertible tops on the Internet- Not all tops are the same- not the materials used nor the way they make the tops- they might not be reinforced where the tops needs it . Plus if something goes wrong with your top - it has to be sent to the person who SOLD you the top- this can be very expensive and your vehicle could be down for weeks. You will also have to pay for labor to remove the top plus put the new one on again.
10. Using the latches as leverage when closing their convertible top - especially mustangs, they are pot metal and "pop" and are very expensive to replace.
